Discolored teeth

Most people have some form of discoloration on their teeth. Food, coffee, tea, wine, soft drinks and, of course, snuff and smoking stets tracks. Some medications and certain diseases can also discolor teeth. An accident can cause discoloration of a tooth or several teeth, for that matter. It is also interesting that an excessive intake of fluoride in the calcification of teeth can make the teeth discolored. In addition, whiteness decreases often over the years and some of us have less white teeth already from birth.

To smile and laugh is salubrious and your smile is also an important part of the first impression people get of you. Teeth whitening does not only contributes to whiter teeth and a beautiful smile but also to a better self-esteem. Already in the pharaohs of Egypt humans bleached there teeth. Since then, methods of teeth whitening developed considerably. Today almost anyone can have a dazzling white smile.

Plasma light bleaching

Plasma light bleaching is used to activate the whitening gel.
Gums, lips, mouth, etc. do not need to be covered up to avoid harmful side effects and no tingle on occurs during or after treatment. Plasma Light Bleaching involves the use of carefully composed and soft medical preparation in combination with balanced brightness. Normally, patients who  bleaches their teeth with plasma light have no need to come back for repeated treatments. Bleaching with plasma light gives a very good long lasting result.

Teeth whitening with laser

Laser whitening is used to activate the whitening gel. The treatment is harmless but it is common to feel tingle in teeth. The tingle can sit for a few days after treatment. For teeth whitening with laser the teeth and gum is isolated with a tightly fitting plastic and both patient and dentist need goggles against laser light. Not everyone is suitable candidates for laser bleaching. An important risk to consider in teeth whitening by laser is the laser heats the teeth and can sometimes cause side effects in the form of dental pulp retraction.

Teeth whitening with whitening trays.

using bleaching trays takes longer than laser whitening or bleaching with the plasma light. You can buy a bleaching kit in a general shop, mail order or through the Internet. Another option is to get a personalized whitening tray from a dentist. The actual bleaching of the teeth you conduct yourself at home. Either during night or daytime. The result is similar to that of a laser or plasma light whitening, but takes considerably longer time and is besides more difficult.

Whitening Toothpaste

Toothpaste must contain at least 10% carbamide peroxide to work created. The carbamide peroxide should be on your teeth for a long time for the bleaching to even take effect and is therefore not optimal for teeth whitening. A good whitening toothpaste is excellent after a treatment to keep the teeth white as long as possible. Toothpaste does not alter the shade of your teeth but discourage new spots to occur.

Whitening Strips

Whitening Strips are strips coated with a low percentage whitening gel  . The strips cover only certain parts of the front teeth and they will not remove stains between teeth. The strips gives often an uneven and speckled result. They are neither approved in Sweden.

Home-bleaching through the Internet

When it comes to cheap home treatments that you can order over the Internet you should be extra careful. It is not uncommon that preparations can be directly harmful to your teeth.
Home-bleaching gives in 70% of the cases, side effects. These may include gum damage or tingle to such an extent that the treatment must be discontinued. A good tip is to always consult a dentist before starting a treatment.

Deep whitening

Deep whitening is a combination bleaching method and originates from the U.S.
The treatment begins with a 14 day home bleaching treatment  where the patient is sleeping with an extra thick, customized  bleaching tray.
As things stand today people use a 2-component gel with 16% carbamide peroxide.
The  treatment is rounded up with a clinical bleaching, with or without light.
The treatment is primarily intended to bleach difficult discolored teeth.

Ozone bleaching

Researches on bleaching with ozone is currently on going.
Preliminary predictive in vitro (laboratory) results shows the extremely rapid bleaching effect on teeth.
Ozone is a highly toxic gas and is difficult to control.
It is therefore very doubtful whether this method can reach the market as a finished product.
However, we are observing the development.

Ultrasonic Bleaching

Activation of Teeth Whitening Gel using ultrasound has been shown to produce good results.
The kinetic energy of the ultrasound has a faster degradation process of discoloration of the molecules.
Unfortunately, it has been difficult to find a Tooth Whitening Gel to this method that was stable enough for the product to become popular on the world market. We monitor developments.

Teeth bleaching with chlorine dioxide

Teeth whitening with active chlorine dioxide has been on the European market since the turn of the millennium. Chlorine dioxide is an oxidizing gas in a similar way as hydrogen peroxide breaks down discoloration of the teeth enamel without damaging the enamel structure. Research and studies in the United States has been going around the product since the 1970s.
Active chlorine dioxide is used today primarily as disinfectant substance in the food (meat, fruit and vegetables), water purification, industrial bleaching, and as an active ingredient in dental oral care products such as toothpaste and mouthwash. A number of completed medical studies have shown very positive results around the chlorine dioxide properties. The main advantage of chlorine dioxide gas is that the predictive in vitro kills all bacteria (including multidrug-resistant), viruses, spores and fungi in less than a minute. The product has been great as teeth whitening preparations in markets such as Britain, where hydrogen peroxide has been illegal to sell. As teeth whitening preparations, the product is not so interesting for the Swedish market since it has no specific advantages compared to hydrogen peroxide. In other contexts, such as toothpaste and mouthwash product is very interesting because it proved to be both stable at room temperature and have very good properties for oral health.

Footnote;
ClO2 Chlorine dioxide is a gas and should not be confused with chlorine (brand) that can be purchased in supermarkets as a bleaching agent. Calciumhypoclorite and Sodium used in water treatment of swimming pools are also chemical substances that are not to be confused with chlorine dioxide. Chlorine, etc. should not be used for teeth whitening as they are proven harmful to the teeth enamel structure.

Blasting

To blaster teeth is reality no bleaching method in the strict sense, since the method only removes superficial discoloration mechanically. Blasting works well if you only want to remove superficial discoloration. A few blasting methods have proved to be so strong abrasive effect that a certain occasional roughness of the enamel has occurred. This type of roughness makes it easier for new discoloration stick to the teeth surface. Brilliant Smile recommends traditional trimmings in front of blasting.

Summery

In conclusion, we note that there are several different methods of teeth whitening and that all methods are not suitable for all kind of teeth. Laser Bleaching, bleaching ultrasound, plasma light bleaching and bleaching with bleaching trays gives good results but have some varied approaches. Ultrasonic Bleaching and plasma light bleaching is the methods that are gentle on the mast of your teeth as the laser teeth whitening and bleaching with bleaching trays entail some risk of temporary tingle in your teeth. The currently most promising method for whitening is the clinic is ultrasonic bleaching which compared to plasma light bleaching has a significantly shorter duration of treatment.
